Corporate Sustainability

The Group recognises that corporate responsibility and sustainability is an integral part of being a successful business and strives to maintain and build on relationships with the Group’s stakeholders, including employees, the local community, our customers and industry partners to meet the multi-faceted goals of corporate sustainability.

Key ongoing activities include;

  • The Marshall Group spearheaded the Cambridge Rainforest Appeal to enable theWorld Land Trust to fund the purchase of a key wildlife corridor in Borneo. The land purchase is expected to secure the future of approximately 600 Orang-utans, a critically endangered species and to prevent the release of 94,000 tonnes of carbon emissions. • Both Marshall Aerospace and Marshall Land Systems became signatories to the MoD Sustainable Procurement Charter. Both companies are actively working on streamlining procurement activities to ensure best practice in becoming greener and more sustainable.
  • Marshall Aerospace has installed a new Sustainable Urban Drainage System for its new Business Aviation hangar which releases surface water at a controlled flow rate to lessen the impact of flooding and subsequent damage to the environment.
  • The Motor Group continues to maximise waste efficiency initiatives. A specialised cardboard baler has been purchased for the Cambridge site and has reduced the volume of cardboard disposal by 90%.
  • A dedicated environmental team and a nominated individual within each operating company to monitor actively the day to day running of environmental activities whilst maintaining regulatory and legislative compliance.
  • Maintaining an Environmental Management System (EMS) which operates to the requirements and guiding principles of ISO14001.
  • Active participation by the Chairman of the Group in the Environmental committee reinforcing the commitment and emphasis placed on the Group’s environmental stewardship.
  • The ongoing, annual participation in the Cambridgeshire Travel for Work Partnership travel survey. This assists our understanding of employee travel patterns and enables the Group to introduce targeted travel initiatives. Indeed, Marshall Aerospace is currently implementing the ‘Cycle to Work’ scheme which will have a twofold benefit of not only reducing traffic congestion and vehicle emissions but also improving the health of employees.

Future initiatives for the coming year are well underway. The Group has recently secured a new electricity contract which will provide certified green electricity for the Cambridge site. This contract will provide approximately 75% of the Group’s annual electricity requirement.

Building on the Group’s desire to understand and actively reduce its energy consumption, smart energy meters will be installed across the Cambridge site in 2009. The meters will:

  • improve the transparency of energy consumption;
  • help identify areas of waste; and
  • allow targeted monitoring and energy optimisation initiatives.

The Group is also in the early stages of exploring alternative sources of energy in order to reduce further the overall carbon footprint of the Group’s activities.

The Group is a founding member of the Cambridge Preservation Society and provided the initial funding for the Coton Countryside Reserve. In June 2008 the Reserve was officially opened by Robert Marshall (below) in recognition of the Group’s support.
